Luminary Spot art exhibit at Arta Gallery
A group exhibition by:

Craig Beal, David Brown, Cliff Kearns, Toni Marvin, Michelle Montague and Yuja Yokoyama

Arta gallery is pleased to present a selection of contemporary and figurative paintings by various artists. Get caught up in enigmatic adventures of figurative and contemporary paintings. The fragments of recognizable imagery will compel the viewer to go further into a dreamlike quality and the search for an unidentifiable narrative, although the narrative work will elude the viewer, the conscious beauty will develop and will be suspended in time.

COLOURblind? Group Art Exhibition 2008
This year two of my works will be part of the COLOURblind? 2008 touring exhibition.

Based on this year's MASK theme, rather than using a literal definition, I have decided to use a metaphorical interpretation through the depiction of two figures using myself as the model. The works entitled "Today We Are, Tomorrow We Will Be", lies in the theories that challenges the perception of reality and encourages the continual research and questioning of certain truths that have been presented before us. The compound effect they have is illustrated via a transition, referencing the result of a manipulated world, where the seemingly otherworld created by technology has become part of one's daily existence.

Touring at various locations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Mississauga, Vaughan and Brampton, this year's show will feature the works of several Canadian artists. Some of the locations include:
Metro Hall,
Vaughan Public Library,
Scarborough Civic Centre,
Mississauga Heritage Centre

Happy New Year!
May everyone have a fulfilled and prosperous 2008!

As I look back on 2007 there has been some ups and downs, but as a student of life the lesson is not to dwell on the negative but to focus on the positives. Everything is an experience nothing more or less it is us that label them as good or bad. So instead I will take what I have learned thus far in this short life and move forward. Nature is not concerned with good or bad nor does she compartmentalize. Nature loves variety thus she is always creating, growing adapting and is ever flowing like water the source of life. It is humankind that is rigid, concerned with sameness, destroying and categorizing things which is the very opposite of what nature is. Which is perhaps the reason why we are always in conflict with ourselves and this living planet. We can not focus on what isn't but rather what is.

Always live and revel in the moment at hand my friends.

Sincerely,
Michelle Montague

Six Ah Wi Art Collective and Genius Loves Company- Phase 2

Opening Reception: July 6th, 2007
@ The Gladstone Hotel

1214 Queen Street West
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
M6J 1J6

Genius Loves Company visual art project is about creating and incorporating all facets of the arts, to give Visual Art a voice. The theme Genius Loves Company came about by exploring how the arts compliment and often give birth to one another.

The philosophy behind Genius Loves Company is to release individual capacities of artists, by providing a stage or space for expression to be viewed and shared. The artists will create visual images through music, films and poetry, storytelling, real or imagined.

The concept Genius Loves Company is to show that any given communities are composed of the strands of history, experiences and tradition that knit specific community into a distinct entity. Henceforth, artists are weavers whose skills help to keep this communal fabric intact. Also artists have the ability to create new patterns within it in response to current demands.

New Works Added to Fullmontague
Four new additions have been posted to the Abstract Gallery of the website. Three of these works were on exhibit at Arta Gallery in The Distillery District (Toronto, CAN). For those who attended I thank-you very much for your support. It has been a great experience and the show was a great success.

The titles of the new works are as follows:

"Metro 2006"
"View From Union Station"
"The Gardiner From Metro"
"Another View From Metro Hall"

These works are the result of bridging my drawing, painting and digital practices in to one. Sketches of these were done on location in and around Union Station in Toronto. If interested you could view these drawings in the Illustration Gallery on the website. Below is an excerpt further explaining my new works.

"My current work is an experiment in bridging the 'Analog' and 'Digital' world. Multi-layered landscapes with depth in colour, pattern and subtle detail in texture and ink drawings created on location are the foundation of the 'analog' process. These paintings and drawings are then 'digitally' merged and processed resulting in a series of abstracted landscapes that portray fictitious New Worlds based on technology and architectural imagery".

Any questions and comments are always appreciated by sending me an email.

Peace Be With You!

New Additions To Fullmontague
Good Evening,

New works have been posted to all the galleries on Fullmontague be sure to take a peek on the progression of the work.

In addition, I am also in the process of making some minor changes to the website as well.
One change is to make certain images available as limited edition prints and greeting cards for those who expressed an interest. This would only be for a trial period and if there is a generated interest in these items then it will be a permanent feature on the site.
My purpose for this is to provide those with the opportunity who are unable to purchase an original artwork but would like to a have a print or a greeting card etc... as a gift for themself or a loved one.

The second change on Fullmontague is to make viewable on the site preliminary sketches and illustrations of my works. Once again this is another avenue for those who support my work an inside look at the progression of my works and ideas. I have already uploaded my images to the "Other" gallery on Fullmontague . Eventually this gallery will be renamed "Sketches and Illustrations".

Other than the planned changes on Fullmontague things are busy this summer as I am preparing for an upcoming show in Toronto's Distillery District plus some other projects that will remain a secret for now. But in the meantime I will keep you posted.

Positive energy and inner peace!

Calling For All Geniuses

Giving visual art a voice -- beginning this April

Toronto, Ont. - April 5th, 2006 Are you one of those people who had a great idea for a painting and dreamed of collaborating with an artist to develop your idea? Well, this is your chance ...

Introducing the truly ground-breaking concept of using modern technology to give visual art a voice. The Genius Loves Company art project uses the Internet to engage the general public in the co-creation of art inspired by art. Have you ever been moved by a song, taken into a fantasy journey by a great movie, or left spellbound by a wonderful book? Now imagine transferring that sense of wonderment onto a painting!

During the month of April 2006, artists from the SIX AH WI Collective will be accepting creative ideas from the general public for the creation of a total of six public paintings which will be displayed during the Genius Loves Company exhibition. The exhibition will take place from October 14th to 28th, 2006 at the Arta Gallery in the trendy Distillery district. Following the two-week run at Arta Gallery, the exhibition will move to Ellington's Café (805 St. Clair Ave W).

But we need your participation immediately as the goal of the project is to foster the active participation of the general public with the artists during the creative process. Please e- mail the artists to share your ideas, encourage them in their creative process, or simply to lend your support in a few words.

How to get involved?
We invite you to visit the exhibition's site today at www.geniuslovescompany.ca -- where you will virtually meet the six talented artists of the Genius Loves Company exhibition. With the theme of the exhibition being "art inspired by art", the nature of this project is to promote all facets of the arts so as to give Visual Art a more interactive and entertaining voice. The Genius Loves Company concept came about by exploring how the arts compliment and often give birth to one another. Each member of our collective will produce numerous works of art inspired by musicians, writers, poets, instrumentalists and filmmakers. Our intention is to inspire our audience to embrace visual arts by enticing them with art forms that are readily accessible to them; be it online, at bookstores or video and music outlets.
Each artist (Ato Seitu, Georgia Fullerton-Morgan, Sonia Farquharson, Michelle Montague, Abye Kifle, and Tafewa Turner) has chosen a particular piece from another artistic discipline (song, movie or book) which you will help them render into a painting. Take the opportunity now to visit the website and find out which original artistic expression they chose!

The SIX AH WI Collective is available for interviews. Members of the media are encouraged to contact Ato Seitu or Melvin Bakandika below to facilitate coverage of the artists and the exhibition.

Just to keep you up to date with my progress there has been a small series of black and white works added to the landscape gallery which I am excited about. Recently I've been practicing my skill at drawing particularly in the medium of brush and India ink. While visiting my mother over the summer I have decided to express the beauty of the landscape and gardens of Windsor,Ontario. Through these drawings I wish to share with you my vision and experience of Canada's most Southern city. I have not set prices for these works yet, but if you have any questions or comments regarding them please feel free to contact me.

Posted in the Abstract and Figurative galleries of Fullmontague you will find the paintings from the exhibit Much Silence Makes a Loud Noise which ran from July 15-30 at the Ashanti Room (Toronto, CAN).

In this latest series of works I wanted to depict the figure in their personal environment inviting the viewer to embark with me (the figure) on a meditative journey in life. My works are a vessel for the viewer, through which emotions are evoked, telling a story and creating a unique experience within the mind.

I invite you to take a look at these works, if you have any questions please fell free contact me.

New Additions to Fullmontague
Good Evening,

As always working very busily in my corner of the world, I just wanted to keep you posted with regards to the progress of my works. Temporarily they are posted in the Other gallery on website.

Currently there are some projects on the go one which includes a summer exhibit with three of my fellow artists sponsored by the Ontario Art Council and Tropicana Community Organization which of course you will be hearing more about in the upcoming weeks. The second project is a revamp of Fullmontague. As I mature as an individual and as an artist, my work does as well and Fullmontague should be reflective of this.

As always I welcome you to take a peek at the works and any questions.

Goodnight and take care.

Digital on Textile- New Additions to Fullmontague
Hello everyone, yes it has been a while and for those who have noticed due to the massive blackout on the Eastern part of North America, Fullmontague was offline! But now things are up and back to normal again (whatever normal is...).

Anyway just to let you know there has been quite a few additions to the
Digital Gallery on the site. These works are working titles in progress therefore they are titled by the date created so that I won't forget. So far I am discovering new aspects of my creativity which is quite exciting. Also I have figured out a method of outputting my digital creations on cotton and linen fabric which adds even more dimension and detail to my works. Combining both methods of textile printing and digital painting has given me a renewed sense of direction to my abstract work which I am glad to share...

Computer Generated Abstracts at Fullmontague
For the past few days I have been creating abstracts with the tools of my computer.
The range of possibilities is infinite and I have a respect for those who create computer generated or digital image arts (it is not an easy task and one can spend just as much time and energy in producing computer generated art as well as traditional art), but the idea of getting down and dirty with acrylics is still too irresistable to give up totally.

I have posted my new creations in the new digital gallery created on the site. Maybe amateurish by some standards, but it was a fun experience and I will continue to develop the use of this medium in addition to painting with acrylics.

More Additions to the Abstract Gallery
Yes it has been a while but I have been keeping myself very busy this summer while trying to enjoy the nice weather at the same time.
My latest series of abstract work consists of four paintings inspired by the theme of summer and the music of Vangelis. The colours are a bit outside of my comfort zone as I try to mix my tradtional primary hues with such hues as burgandy, gold and limegreen. The title for this series is still a work in progress but I want it to reflect the heat of summer and the coolness of Vangelis.

Techniques used for Textures...

Last week someone emailed: "what kind of techniques do you use for textures?" Unfortunately the person did not leave an email address so I could respond to the question so I thought I would post a reply on Fullmontague...
My abstract paintings consists of several layers, thick and thin to get a skin-like quality. Some layers are thick enough to display the colour painted but thin enough so that the several layers underneath are still visible. Then a series of glazes thinned out with water are applied in order to "lift" the applied layers off the canvas. As a result you would get both the effects of a smooth (like skin) or a rough (sand-like) quality creating beautiful shapes and forms in the process. Each painting takes about 8-12 hours to complete and consists of approximately 20-40 layers, but sometimes I have been known to work on a painting for 20 hours at a time creating artworks consisting of about 60 layers!

Impressions
My latest series Impressions has now been added to the Abstract section of the Fullmontague. This 5 part series took approximately 6-14 hours to complete per painting. Each painting consists of several layers to bring about the desired randomness of colours, shapes, textures and depth.

The event took place on March 3rd, 2003 at Arts on King Wagner Rosenbaum Gallery (Toronto, Ontario). All the proceeds from the donated works of both emerging and established artists went towards IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) Research at the Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre.

Valley Park Middle School
As part of the Human Rights Through Art Exhibition and Black History Month I was invited by the communications coordinator Melanie Vendrame of Coca-Cola to talk to the grade 7 and 8 students of Valley Park Middle School who were visiting on location (Toronto, Ontario). The students and I discussed how important it is exercise your rights and to be an active participant in the community no matter how big or small. The students were most impressive in their knowledge and questions about human rights and I have to say it was fun spending time with them. They also had questions about my work as an artist and the arts in general. When asked why did I become an artist, I responded that in the arts you have the opportunity to communicate on a different level and if you have a dream then you most definitely have to reach for it for the sky is not the limit and every voice needs to be heard.
